Online Roulette

online roulette table

Roulette is one of the easiest and most frequently played games in casinos. It’s played in every little local casino as well as in the most luxurious casinos of Monte Carlo and Las Vegas. It’s nicknamed ‘The Queen of Casino Games’ mostly because it has very easy rules. In recent years online roulette has also been gaining popularity on internet casinos, where players can choose many varieties, such as European or American roulette for example. The big advantage of playing online games, including roulette, is the possibility of trying it for free without any risk. If players want to play for real money, they must register in one of the many online casinos, then deposit a certain initial cash sum, after which they can start to play.

Introduction to Roulette Game

Online roulette is played in exactly same way as in a traditional casino. The rules differ only in choosing the actual game, which applies to both online and offline versions. The goal is the same too, which is to correctly guess the result of the spinning of the roulette wheel.

The roulette wheel has 37 individual pockets with numbers into which a ball falls after spinning. The numbering can differ according to various roulette types. The player can also choose from various bets, for example bet on the colour or bet “straight up”, which means betting on a particular number. The return of each bet amount is directly dependant on the size of the bet and the risk of each bet.

Classic roulette is divided into a few variants, such as American, French and European, and they differ mainly in the amount of zeros on the roulette wheel. Recently, more and more roulette tables have emerged offering sideways bets with progressive jackpots and other offers to win extra prizes.

Types of online roulette

French roulette

French roulette was first played in Monte Carlo and was the essence of luxury and richness. There’s also only one zero in French roulette and it has 37 colours (red, black, and a green 0) the numbers are divided into an internationally recognised sequence. Only the playing surface is different to other versions and it has slightly different rules regarding the payout of bets with a ratio of 1:1 (for example red/black).

European roulette

European roulette is unquestionably the most popular version of online roulette that’s played all over the world. This type of roulette has 37 pockets with numbers 0 to 36. Numbers 1 to 36 are different in colour – black and red – and 0 is green. The principle of European online roulette is that players try to bet tokens on the number or numbers that they think will win. The winning number is the number of the compartment into which a spinning ball falls on the roulette wheel.

American roulette

American roulette is a very easy and dynamic game, similar to European roulette. It has 38 numbers – contrary to the European – 18 red, 18 black, and two green pockets with zeros – 0 and 00. This special double zero was added to the game mainly in order to increase the profit for the casino. Contrary to European casinos it’s also different in the order of the numbers on the roulette wheel, but the principle of the bets stays the same.

The History of Roulette Game

We don’t know much about the history of roulette. Some sources place the origin of this game to Medieval Greece. Further references also appear during the reign of Louis XIV of France. The original versions of roulette didn’t look anything like the roulette we know today. The whole system was very easy and instead of the roulette wheel there was some sort of cloth. Also the colours were different, which used to be just black and white.

But the truth is that roulette game as we know it today was invented by Blaise Pascal around 1790 in revolutionary France, and its name is literally translated as “small wheel”. Blaise Pascal was an important writer, mathematician, theologian, philosopher and physicist who tried to create ‘perpetual motion’ and after whom the physics theory Pascal’s Law was named.

In 1842, a zero was added to roulette and the amount of numbers rose to 37. In a few more years a double zero was also added, and the amount of numbers in the roulette wheel rose to 38. Both of these changes concluded in the lowering of the player’s chances of winning.

You can find roulette in every traditional and online casino. It’s sometimes called “The Devil’s Invention” because the classic roulette wheel has 37 numbers from 0 to 36 and if added together they come to the number 666, the devils number. There’s also a legend concerning Francois Blanc who, apparently, sold his spirit to the devil in exchange for teaching him the secret of how to win at roulette. After he learned how to play it, he opened his first casino in Monte Carlo. The devil helped him to create the modern version of roulette and as a thank you to the ruler of hell there are 37 numbers on the roulette wheel, and when added together they come to the devil’s number of 666.

Bet on Colour – Red, black The player can bet on red or black. If 0 – which is green – lands, then the player loses the bet
Bet on Odd, Even numbers – Odd, Even The player bets on even or odd numbers. Green 0 doesn’t belong anywhere so if it lands then the player loses the bet.
Bet on High, Low numbers – High, Low The player bets on low or high numbers. Low numbers are from 1-18. High numbers are from 19 to 36. Green 0 doesn’t belong to anywhere so if it lands, then the player loses the bet.
Bet on dozen – Adjacent dozens The player bets on one of the three dozen (12) which are on the layout.

First dozen – from 1 to 12                   Second dozen – from 13 to 24               Third dozen – from 25 to 36,

Again, zero doesn’t belong anywhere.

Column The layout contains 3 columns. If the player bets under one of the columns it means that he/she bets on all the numbers of that column. Again, zero doesn’t belong anywhere.

Roulette game and zero

Zero is a special number in roulette, and has its own rules. In many cases in online roulette when the number 0 lands it means that the player loses money (see the table Types of roulette bets). It may be different in some traditional European casino houses. There, if the number 0 lands, then all the straight bets “freeze” and only during the next round the player finds out whether he/she loses the bet or not. Another possibility is the so called partnership, which means that the player keeps half of his/her bet and loses the other half.

Online Roulette systems

What are roulette systems? A Roulette system is a kind of principle from which it’s possible to win not only at online roulette but also in real casinos. There are many roulette systems, so let’s introduce few here:

Martingale

The Martingale roulette system is one of the most famous and easiest. The principle of the game is that if a player loses, then he/she doubles the bets in the next round. If the player bets for example 2 tokens and loses then in the next round he bets 4. If he loses again then he bets 8 tokens and so on. If he wins it starts from the beginning.

Anti – martingale

The roulette system Anti-martingale is also very easy and easy to remember. The principle of this roulette system is again in doubling the bet. The difference from the previous system is in the fact that the players, if they win, double the bets.

D’Alembert

In the D’Alembert, the player bets on one of the colours on the roulette wheel or on even or odd numbers. So the player first bets 1 token, if he/she loses then bets another token but if he/she wins bets 1 token less.

Superior

When playing the roulette game and working under this system the player bets on a colour. If the player loses then he bets in the next round 1 token more than before. The game will continue until the player gets into the plus by at least 1 token.

Oscar’s Grind

This roulette system was used for the very first time on a table computer in 1965.The player will choose red or black or even or odd pocket in the beginning and he/she will play with that pocket until the end of one given set. The player bets for example 1 token and if wins the series ends and the game starts all over again. But if the player loses then he/she stays with the same bet, until he/she wins. Then the bet is topped up by one token again and again until the player gets into plus. At this point the set finishes and the player starts with a new set and he/she can choose another pocket on the roulette wheel.
